This album is a celebration of all the incredible people who’ve been part of our journey; our members, volunteers, staff and supporters. Every track tells a story, sparks a memory, or captures a bit of the magic that happens at Square Pegs.

Whether you’ve been with us from the start or you’re discovering Square Pegs Arts for the first time, I hope these songs make
you smile, sing along, and feel part of our community.

“Writing music with Square Pegs Arts is absolutely one of my favourite things to do. Hearing the tracks come together and seeing them performed on stage as part of all of the wonderful musicals, films, shows and projects is such a rewarding process. Music is such a good way for the members of Square Pegs Arts to shine.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to be part of so many special moments, standing ovations and life-changing experiences. As a composer I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of writing in multiple styles and genres, and I love using music to help to tell the stories and evoke the emotions of the shows.

As part of these album notes I’ve added brief descriptions of each track to give context and explain the background. Some of the
songs have instrumental sections or longer intros to allow for on-stage movement, and some are written from very specific character perspectives. I’m often given the most ridiculous and wacky briefs (“Paul, can you write a song about a fox threatening some squirrels” “Paul, we need a track about a travelling mouse circus who have been trained by two crazy brothers…”

I meet with the directors of the shows beforehand to find out the storylines and who is playing who so that I can write specifically for the performers. I’ve had to learn the knack of making the songs accessible so that everyone can perform them, whilst also maintaining the highest standard possible, and making sure they have absolute bangers to be proud of. I’m a much better songwriter for it; my abilities have been stretched and it’s been so much fun. More importantly, I’ve always been so impressed by how easily the members of Square Pegs Arts pick up the songs, and perform them so brilliantly. This album celebrates them as performers, and is a chance to showcase just how talented they all are.”
